Student Clubs

Native American Student Association

The Native American Student Association (NASA) works to bring cultural awareness to campus and the surrounding communities. NASA hosts several events throughout the year, including the All Campus Convocation and Thanksgiving Feast, Native American Awareness Week, and Northland's longest running event, the Northland College Annual Spring Pow Wow, now in its 35th year. Each year the Spring Powwow draws people from across the country together in a vibrant celebration of Native American cultures.

Roots for Change

Roots for Change (R4C) is a student led organization that focuses on activism in the community and nation. They work on issues they feel warrant more awareness, such as international and local social justice, environmentalism, and animal rights. R4C is also an umbrella club which sponsors larger events such as the annual trip to protest the SOA (a U.S. training facility, many graduates of which have been found guilty of grievous human rights violations in South America) and the Obama Campaign.

Dance Team

Since 2000, the Northland College Dance Team has performed at the half times of the men’s and women’s home basketball games. Dance Team is supported by the Northland College Student Association and has a faculty advisor, but the choreography, practice, and fundraising is run by students. In the winter of 2006, the dance team competed for the first time in the United Performance Association’s National Dance Competition held in Minneapolis, and placed 7th in the Collegiate Open division. They do not hold tryouts, and welcome everyone to join them in supporting Northland’s athletics.

United Cultures at Northland

United Cultures at Northland (UCAN) is a student group that celebrates ethnical, cultural, and geographical diversity. Members work to educate the Northland community about different cultures through such aspects as traditions, customs, or food. Students in this club have an active inclination to seek out and learn about the world at large and to share their experiences with their peers. UCAN’s largest event is the annual Multicultural Fair which features tables showcasing cultures and countries with information, factoids, travel tips, food and more. This free event, which is also open to the wider community, also features free music, dance, and entertainment. UCAN raises funds for their efforts with an Ethnic Food Sale, in which UCAN members sell traditional meals, and a multi-cultural cookbook. UCAN has begun efforts to raise enough money to sponsor a cow for an impoverished family through Heifer International, an effort they hope to make an annual tradition.

American Fisheries Society

The members of the Northland College American Fisheries Society Sub-unit work to provide students interested in pursuing a career in the fisheries field with opportunities to gain experience and learn more about the different aspects of the fisheries field. They also help local agencies by volunteering their time for related projects and activities.

National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society

The Northland chapter of the National Weather Association and American Meteorological Society (NWA/AMS) serves as Northland’s on-campus weather organization, working to make the community better aware of local weather. Students in the group run the Northland College Forecast Lab and provide automated local weather forecasts over the phone at 682-1488. The group also strives to educate the local community about weather hazards and safety by sponsoring the annual Skywarn™ class. NWA/AMS Volunteers also support the annual Book Across the Bay event by providing up to date weather information and an hourly forecast for the race.

Paws and Claws

Paws and Claws began as an organization for those students interested in pursuing a career in veterinary science, but has since broadened to include any students who have a passion for animals. The students host debates on various controversial issues relating to animals, and bring speakers to campus for club meetings. Speakers have included veterinarians, those studying chronic wasting disease in the deer populations, humane officers, managers of the Chequamegon Humane Association (CHA), animal trainers, as well as fellow students sharing their experiences. Throughout the year, the group takes trips to zoos, aquariums, farms, and horse ranches. Student in Paws and Claws also help dogs and cats at the CHA as a community service project.

Psi Chi

Northland’s Psi Chi group is a member of the national undergraduate psychology honor society. Their purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in the science of psychology. As a Northland club, students in Psi Chi run several events, such as movies and de-stress events as well as a community service project each semester.

uNight

uNight is a group of Northland students working to aid the resolution of the 20-year war in Uganda through fundraising, community education, and government petitioning for intervention. The humanitarian conflict in Uganda is not only a crisis rivaling that of the Darfur region in its severity, it has gone largely unnoticed by the global community. Almost two million people have been displaced, and those that can survive the direct violence must struggle against a host of deadly, preventable diseases which kill 1,000 people each week in government camps.

The Alliance

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Ally (LGBTA) Alliance works to bring understanding of LGBTA issues to the Northland community. The Alliance hosts many events throughout the school year: weekly discussion topics ranging from Prop 8 to Trans terminology to HIV/AIDS, National Coming Out Day, Drag shows every semester, and LGBTA Awareness Week. Whether gay, straight, bi, trans or questioning we welcome you to our meetings, all we ask is that you bring an open mind.

Art League

Because the arts are important for healthy community, Art League's focus is to bring creativity, and fun art-activities to the Northland Campus. Every year we organize a very successful Empty Bowl, take fieldtrips to see art and culture in Minneapolis and Duluth, host free Life Drawing every Tuesday, have workshops, collaborate on group art projects, and much more. Art League is ever changing depending on the strengths its members bring to the group. We are all about fun, creativity, and art for EVERYONE!
