On tap this week for Northland College
February 19, 2013
Northland College is involved is host to several events this week.
• Tim Bristol, director for the Alaska office of Trout Unlimited, will offer a public lecture at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at noon on Friday, Feb. 22. Bristol's presentation, "Watersheds: Clean Water, Wild Places, and Healthy Communities," will explore conservation work in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. Revisions have been made to the forest's management plan and roadless rule, providing the opportunity for significant watershed protection in Bristol Bay. A copper mine proposed at the headwaters of Bristol Bay has posed challenges to the health of the watershed. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness and Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness.
• The Northland College Art Department will host the exhibit "Vanity/Vanitas" and feature the artwork of Terri Frame and Kally Malcom, teaching fellows at Northland. The two will display their work in the Dexter Library on campus. A public reception for the exhibit will be held Friday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. The show will run through the month of March.
• Northland College students will participate in Campus Camp Wellstone on Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute. Campus Camp Wellstone is a progressive leadership training opportunity for students that focuses on community organization, voter engagement and leadership development. The day-and-a-half long event teaches students the philosophy behind grassroots organization, relationship building, strategic planning, messaging and more. The training initiative is a part of Wellstone Action, a nonprofit organization founded by the Wellstone family after the deaths of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Sheila. The training will run from 3:15 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
