Northland College celebrates the season with holiday concert series
November 28, 2012
Northland College heralds in the holiday season with four concerts during the month of December. Seasonal performances from the Northland College Winds, Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra, Northland College Choirs and Northland College Jazz Band will be held from Dec. 4-12. The events, offerings in the Northland College Community Connections series, are open to the public.
The Northland College Winds will kick off the concert series with their performance, "Christmas in the Wind," on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvord Theatre at Northland. The symphonic band will perform several holiday selections, including an arrangement of "Personent Hodie" from Piae Cantiones (1582) and the Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller) arrangement of Stille Nacht.
"There will be finely crafted settings for symphonic and jazz band, as well as orchestra, featuring some of the most beautiful music of the season, including some lesser known melodies," said Joel Glickman, conductor and instrumental music director at Northland College.
In addition, the Northland College Winds will also offer a treatment of "Twas In The Moon Of Wintertime," a Canadian carol originally written by a Jesuit Missionary. The carol first appeared in the Huron Indian language and was adapted to a 16th century French tune. Other selections will include more mainstream Christmas songs.
The Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra will also perform a selection of holiday favorites in their "The Sounds of Christmas" concert. The performance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvord Theatre at Northland College. The orchestra will play a collection of tunes from film, traditional carols andtime-honored pop standards. The concert features arrangements, including "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Polar Express," "Ding Dong! Merrily On High!" and more.
The Northland College Choirs will perform the holiday concert "Rejoice!" on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Congregational Church in Ashland. The evening will include sacred and secular performances from the Northland Singers, the Chamber Choir, the Accidentals and the Lumberjack Chorus. The Northland Singers will perform "Sancta Maria, Mater Dei" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart while the Chamber Choir will sing "Riu, Riu, Chiu," an early Renaissance Spanish carol. The Accidentals will provide a performance of "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)." Meanwhile, the Lumberjack Chorus will perform the "Boar's Head Carol" in a new arrangement by Dr. Russell Thorngate, Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Northland.
The Northland College Jazz Band will cap off the concert series with their performance "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvord Theatre on the Northland campus. The program will include a mix of contemporary and vintage swing music. The band will also perform several Latin American numbers, as well as fresh new jazz arrangements of "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."
All concerts are free and open to the public with the exception of the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra performance. More information about costs to attend can be found online at www.northland.edu/community.
