Habitat Restoration
Funded in part by a grant from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), more than 10 projects were completed to restore and protect habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms in tributaries of the Chequamegon Bay watershed of Lake Superior. Examples include replacing culverts that will reduce sediment and road maintenance issues and allow fish to pass through them, working with private landowners to improve riparian conditions by controlling livestock access, developing alternative watering areas, providing stable access across streams and drainages, and changing management to appropriate locations for feeding and wintering livestock. These activities not only reduce nutrient, bacteria, and sediment inputs to area streams, but also help improve overall farm management. As part of this collaborative project, the U.S. Geological Survey and Bad River Natural Resources Department monitored water quality and quantity in Beartrap Creek. Data collected may be used to evaluate the success of Best Management Practices implemented upstream and to plan future projects continuing to improve watershed health.
