The Northland Tuition Guarantee
The new Northland Tuition Guarantee is our commitment to help students and families more effectively plan for and afford the cost of attending and graduating from Northland College.
We guarantee that as long as a student enrolls in consecutive Fall and Winter semesters for the four years it should take them to graduate from Northland, they will have the same:
- student fees, and
- room rate
Q. What are the basic terms of the Guarantee?
A. The new Northland Tuition Guarantee:
- Begins Fall 2014, students will have the same tuition, student fees, and room rate as the year they first enrolled.
- Is for students continuously enrolled full-time in Fall and Winter semesters.
- Is available for up to four academic years.
- Applies to both in-state and out-of-state students.
- Applies to both students from the United States and other countries.
Q. Will the Guarantee affect the amount of financial aid a student receives?
A. No. Northland will continue to offer the same generous levels of financial aid it has in the past. These offers include Academic Scholarships based on a student's high school GPA, SAT, or ACT scores. They also include need-based aid provided to students who file the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) and who demonstrate financial need based on their family’s financial circumstances. More than 97% of Northland’s currently enrolled students receive some form of financial assistance through these programs.
Q. Will Northland still match the tuition at my home state’s primary public university through its Access Guarantee announced a few years ago?
A. Yes. Northland will continue its Access Guarantee. This means that high school students graduating with a B average or above and whose families earn $150,000 or less in annual adjusted gross income are guaranteed to receive scholarships in recognition of need and academic ability that make the cost to attend Northland equal to or lower than advertised tuition, fees, room, and board at the primary flagship public university of the student’s home state. Any eligibility for federal or state need-based aid will make Northland's costs even lower.
Q. When is the Tuition Guarantee not in effect?
A. If a student transfers out of Northland, the Guarantee ends. Tuition for a re-enrolling student will be at the current, new student tuition rate for the year of re-enrollment.
Similarly, if a student withdraws from Northland or does not enroll full-time in consecutive Fall and Winter semesters for any reason other than military service, medical, or other college-approved leaves, the Guarantee will end.
Q. What about students who withdraw or transferred and then are readmitted to Northland?
A. Students who withdraw for any reason, other than for military service, medical, or other college-approved leaves will not be granted an extension of their guarantee. They will re-enroll at the current tuition rate for new entering students.
Q. What happens if I don’t graduate within four years?
A. At the end of the four years, students will be placed in the cohort two years following their first enrolling at Northland. For example, students who entered in Fall 2014 will have their guarantee expire after the Winter semester in 2018. If they are still enrolled in Fall 2018, they will be moved to the cohort of students that entered in Fall 2016. Similarly, in future years, as each cohort expires, students still enrolled will be moved to the cohort two years following their original enrollment.
Q. Are all costs guaranteed?
A. Tuition, student fees, and room expenses at Northland will remain constant for students under the new Tuition Guarantee. The only other expenses not included in the new Tuition Guarantee are food service (board), special course fees, or costs associated with exchange or study abroad programs.
Q. How does study abroad affect the Northland Tuition Guarantee?
A. Students who choose to study elsewhere for a semester or year under an existing Northland approved program may do so without losing eligibility for the new Northland Tuition Guarantee. As these opportunities are designed to occur during the regular academic year, May Term, or over the summer, students are able to participate and still graduate within four years.
Q. Are transfer students eligible for the Tuition Guarantee?
A. Yes, transfer students are eligible for the new Northland Tuition Guarantee. Transfer students will be charged rates equal to the current rates for the year they first enroll at Northland. Following their admission to Northland, transfer students will be assigned an expected graduation date determined on an individual basis based both on the number of credits they are transferring to Northland and the expected time necessary to graduate. Transfer students will then receive the Tuition Guarantee through that expected graduate date.
Q. Is May Term included in this Tuition Guarantee price?
A. Yes, the new Northland Tuition Guarantee includes tuition for the full academic year including both Fall and Winter semesters as well as the May Term.
Q. Do I have to enroll in May Terms to continue eligibility for the Tuition Guarantee?
A. No, enrollment in May Term is optional. Continuous enrollment needed to maintain eligibility for the new Northland Tuition Guarantee is required only for consecutive Fall and Winter semesters and does not include May Term.
Q. What about students attending part-time?
A. Part-time students are not eligible for the new Northland Tuition Guarantee as they pay a per credit fee set each academic year.
Q. How will this Guarantee affect current Northland students?
A. Currently enrolled students at Northland College who enroll for Fall 2014 will also have their tuition, student fees, and room rate locked in for their remaining years at the College. Currently enrolled students will receive notification in early spring 2014 of how long they will be eligible for the Tuition Guarantee based on their number of accumulated credits and class standing.
