For Employers and Internship Sponsors
Internship Partners
- Internship Basics: Our Internship Guide provides a general overview of Northland's internship program. Northland's distinctive curriculum offers over twenty majors with a variety of areas of emphasis and minors.
- Developing an Internship: If you are unsure what constitutes an internship, the Department of Labor's internship fact sheet provides clear guidelines.
Students typically do an internship during one semester, but internships may span multiple terms. Our semesters are:
Term Dates Recommended Start Date for Internship Position Advertising
Fall term Sept-Dec March
Winter term Jan-April November
May term May1-25 January
Summer Term June-August February
Students can take an internship for between one and four credits. Northland College awards credit on an hourly basis:
- 1 credit = 45 hours per semester (approximately 3 hours/week)
- 2 credits = 90 hours per semester (approximately 6 hours/week)
- 3 credits = 135 hours per semester (approximately 9 hours/week)
- 4 credits = 180 hours per semester (approximately 12 hours/week)
In addition to performing the responsibilities assigned to them, students will develop learning goals for the experience, and as an internship supervisor, we ask that you help provide the opportunities to help a student achieve their learning goals. You play a critical role in helping to shape the habits and skills of these young professionals. The example you set will be, for many students, their first formal experience in their future profession. Students will also be working with a faculty member during their internship that will help them:
- Develop learning goals,
- Check in with them throughout the learning experience, and
- Oversee a final project, such as a reflection paper, about the student's learning and experience.
We ask that you confirm that students completed the required number of hours for credit, and along with the completion of the final project, the faculty member will assign a Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grade for the experience.
Advertising an Internship:
- The best way for us to advertise an internship is with a position description. Our template for Internship Position Description is a useful guide for developing this, but you may submit any format that you choose, and we will post them electronically on our internship position board and forward them to faculty. Please send internship position descriptions to internships@northland.edu
- Join us at the 2012-2013 Job and Internship Fair. This free event is scheduled for Thursday, February 7th from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please fill out a request form to be added to our mailing list for more information on this event and other opportunities offered through the Career Education Center.
For all questions, please contact Stacy Craig, Coordinator of Applied Learning, at scraig@northland.edu or (715) 682-1232.
