Grade Point Average
The grade point average is calculated based on courses in which one of the following grades is earned:
| Grade Earned |
Grade Points Per Hour |
| A |
4.0 |
| A- |
3.7 |
| B+ |
3.3 |
| B |
3.0 |

| D+ |

1.0 |
| F |

- Only grades earned at Northland College will be computed for determining academic status.
- Satisfactory (S), Unsatisfactory (U), and Incomplete (I) grades do not affect grade point average
Calculation of the Grade Point Average
The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the number of hours attempted for which grades of A, B ,C, D, or F were earned. Do NOT include any hours in which a S, U, or I was earned. The result, rounded off to two decimal places, is your GPA. (See example below). The chart below is an example of how to determine grade point values earned for letter grades.
| Courses Taken |
Course Hours |
Grades Earned |
Grade Points |
| English 111 | 3 | B |
9.0 |
| Math 140 | 3 | C |
6.0 |
| Business 228 | 3 | C+ |
7.5 |
| Sociology 111 | 4 | B+ |
14.0 |
| Independent Study | 2 |
S |
0 |
- Add the hours attempted. Do not include S, U, or I hours: 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 = 13 hours
- To calculate your total quality points:
- For each course, multiply the number of hours attempted by the number of grade points indicated in the chart above (Example: for Math 140), 3 hours attempted X 2.0 grade points (grade of C) = 6.0 total grade points earned for BUS 228.
- Next, add the grade points for all courses: 9 + 6 + 7.5 + 14 = 36.5 quality points.
- Divide the total grade points by the total hours attempted: 36.5 / 13 = 2.8076923
Round the result to two decimal places: 2.81
